Despite not being at his free-flowing best, Gerwyn Price secured a spot in the quarter-finals of the PDC World Darts Championship for the fourth straight year after a 4-1 win over Jose de Sousa.
Impressively reaching the quarters having only dropped two sets so far, Price admits he still hasn't hit top gear just yet. "I ground out a win, it was one of those games where you just have to get over the winning line and that's what I did," Price reflected. "I felt comfortable all the way through the game, even at 3-1 I felt like I was going to win the game, it was just a matter of time."
Victory over de Sousa means that Price will face off against either Gabriel Clemens or Alan Soutar for a place in the semi-finals. When the Iceman won his world title back in 2021, covid restrictions meant that it was played behind closed doors. Lifting the Sid Waddell trophy again, this time in front of his family and a packed-out Ally Pally is something Price is desperate to do. "Friends and family, that's the main thing. As long as they're here supporting me and I keep winning. My wife probably says I should make things a little easier but as they're here, that's the main thing."
Casting an eye past the culmination of the World Championship and to the Premier League, Price shares his opinion on who he thinks will make the cut. "Obviously the top four usually get in, Rob Cross is certainly in and Luke Humphries, there's another two spots where you could just pick anybody."
