After Van Gerwen impressed on Saturday with an average of over 118, 'Mighty Mike' showed his class again on Sunday afternoon. The 34-year-old Dutchman was trailing 6-9 against Stephen Bunting and had to break 'The Bullet' twice to get through the match. Van Gerwen completed four legs in 13, 12, 11 and 12 arrows respectively to win 10-9 over Bunting.
The seven-time winner of the Players Championship Finals will square off in the semifinals against someone who will be playing only his second semifinal at a major. Gabriel Clemens qualified for the last four by winning 10-7 over Luke Woodhouse, after earlier wins over Josh Rock and Niels Zonneveld, among others.
In the second semifinal, top favorite Luke Humphries will be in action. 'Cool Hand Luke' had to work hard for it Sunday afternoon against James Wade, but got 'The Machine' to his knees 10-7.
A similar opponent awaits at the last four. Ryan Joyce is also a player known for his good finishes. Damon Heta also experienced this, being defeated 10-6 in the quarter-finals, allowing Joyce to advance to the semifinals of a televised tournament for the first time in his career.
After the semifinals, there will be a short break for both finalists. During this break, the final of the PDC World Youth Championship between Gian van Veen and Luke Littler will be played. After that match, it is time for the grand final of the Players Championship Finals.
