Scott Williams hits sensitive nerve with World War joke after defeating Martin Schindler: ''Absolutely nothing personal, just a bit of jeering and jesting with the crowd!"

Scott Williams won 4-3 in sets over Martin Schindler at the World Darts Championship on Wednesday afternoon after a thrilling match. After the match, 'Shaggy' gave a special interview on stage to Sky Sports.

The rivalry between England and Germany is usually great in sports matches, and Williams seemed to add to that. The Englishman made some statements that did not really go down well with some people on social media.

''I've never had such a crowd on my side. I know we won two World Wars and one World Cup but that was..." he said. "But the German in here were huge, all I could hear was them. What a game,'' Williams spoke.

Several hours later, Williams came up with further explanations via X, the former Twitter. ''Thanks for the messages everyone!

A few nasty ones from some German fans, but I understand why! Absolutely nothing personal, just a bit of jeering and jesting with the crowd! I’m British and Proud!!!!"
