Smith on staying grounded after recent success: "When I first came onto the scene, my mum had five jobs just to pay for me on tour"

Michael Smith is currently the world darts champion and number one player on the planet, making a good living. This was not always the case however.

"When I first came onto the scene, my mum had five jobs. My dad was working away for five days a week and they did all that just to pay for me on tour," Smith said. "Once I did make it they quit all their jobs again and it made life easier for them. I've never lost sight of it because we bad to work for everything. We weren't gifted it, we had to fight for everything we've got."

"I'm still a hot head as well but I can keep that cal, keep that under wraps now. I wasn't the nicest of people," continued the 32-year-old Englishman. "But I'm a bit older, a bit wiser now. If you play well, you play well. If you lose, no one died so that's my attitude now."
