Wessel Nijman let a chance to qualify for the quarterfinals at the World Series of Darts Finals slip out of his hands Saturday night. Nijman upset world number one Michael Smith, but lost after six missed match darts.
Nijman initially trailed 3-0 against Smith, but came back strong in the match. By throwing out 74, 80, 79 and 46, Nijman took five legs in a row, leading 5-3 after eight legs.
In the ninth leg, Nijman missed three match darts before Smith connected to make it 5-4. Bullyboy' then produced a 112 check-out to make it 5-5. In the final leg, Nijman missed three more matchdarts before Smith took the win.
''It wasn't that these match darts felt more exciting than other match darts. Sometimes darts just can't be explained,'' Nijman bemoaned afterwards in conversation with Viaplay.
Small consolation for Nijman was that his favorite soccer club AZ won. Nijman was surprised by the large score his club produced, as AZ won 9-1 against Heerenveen.
''One time I'm not here.... Those guys just know I'm not coming, then suddenly they start playing soccer. If I spend 2.5 hours in the car to Groningen, it will be 0-0," Nijman laughed.
