Michael van Gerwen suffered a heavy defeat against Gary Anderson in the second round of the 2024 European Championship on Saturday night. 'The Flying Scotsman' managed to beat his Dutch rival 10-4. Afterwards, a furious Van Gerwen aimed his darts at the tournament's organization.
Van Gerwen gained a break lead early in the match by throwing out 107, but immediately lost the break again. With a 13-darter and a 60 finish, Anderson took over the lead. A 12-darter and a 14-darter gave Anderson a 4-1 advantage going into the break. After the break, it then became 5-1 for the Scot. That margin remained in place, including after a 12-darter by Anderson for a 7-3 lead. Anderson then made it 8-3 by throwing out 64. Van Gerwen broke Anderson in the 12th leg via double 8, but then surrendered his own throw again by not being out in six visits. With a 16-darter, Anderson extended his lead to 9-4. The two-time world champion then closed the match beautifully with a 12-darter.
Disillusioned, Van Gerwen walked off the stage before appearing on camera with Viaplay to do his after-talk. "An offday? Not so much," the four-time European Championship winner told reporter Arjan van der Giessen. "There is a lot of wind on the stage. And they just don't learn, they just don't learn. While yesterday and the day before yesterday there was nothing wrong. They keep making the same mistakes, They want to make a nice tournament here and that's what it should be."
However, the three-time world champion then put the blame on himself as well. ''Of course you can also beat yourself over the head if you didn't play well enough. But at some point it gets into your head and it's hard to deal with that. Any darts expert can see how my darts are laying. And then they say all the doors were closed. Well, they can kiss my bum, none of that is true. And then that creates irritation. Then they say you must be pro enough to deal with that. But I have my limits. The PDC may scratch themselves behind the ears, because this is not the first time'', Van Gerwen fumed.

- What a paltry pay day. Is the Championship going to be on TV or YouTube. I still believe the BBC sunk the BDO when they dumped it for that ridiculous champions league that also died without trace. The prize money for the girls is terrible, why can't they win the same as the boys. It will hardly entice girls to enter the sport.
