Due to the Coronavirus, Michael van Gerwen has spoken about his other passions away from the dart board including for fishing and he spoke recently to De Telegraaf about his hobby.
The number one in the world has a large collection of fishing equipment at home. For example, Van Gerwen has four different set-ups and various other items, including a green sprayed supersonic bait boat. Mighty Mike himself makes little use of that, he told the Dutch newspaper.
“I don't do much with it myself. My friends use it more. They take turns borrowing it. It's funny to see though. They sail on the water with such a bright green thing.''
The three-time world champion also likes to spend his time fishing when he goes abroad. Van Gerwen caught a marlin of no less than 280 kilos
in Gran Canaria.
"That is the other work. I spent about an hour and a half getting that whopper in. Fortunately, the captain helped by sailing back a little bit. At a moment like that you really have to be focused," he said.
During another trip, Van Gerwen even hooked a shark. The Dutchman was fishing for tuna in the Maldives, but when he caught a fish on his line, it wasn't what he expected.
"Suddenly it bit. We thought it was a nice sized tuna, until a shark of about one meter and sixty centimetres surfaced. That gave a huge boost.”
The 31-year-old has a number of destinations on his list to go fishing in the future. "Ice fishing seems cool. I will just plan a vacation to Lapland once. Then I say that we are going to look at the Northern Lights, and then Dad will go fishing. ”
In addition, Van Gerwen wants to go to Chile or Canada someday. "There you seem to be able to fish nicely at sea. For now, that is far from reach with children. Who knows though.”
