Michael van Gerwen's wait for his elusive third World Matchplay title continues after being dumped out on Tuesday by Simon Whitlock.

Van Gerwen was defeated 11-4 by 'The Wizard' and for the third consecutive year, he didn't make the Quarter-Finals. Two years ago it was Jeffrey de Zwaan in the opening round and last year it was Glen Durrant in the second round.
He spoke afterwards to RTL7 and was frustrated in defeat: "So many opportunities ... If you don't use them, you can only blame yourself. Even though he (Whitlock) may have played a good game, maybe I should have won five or six more legs," said Van Gerwen, who last won the World Matchplay in 2015 and 2016.
"Let's say that this is simply not acceptable. It was just a poor display, period. But you know if you let it continue, you'll know with Simon that he's going to gain confidence. But this shouldn't happen."
