Robert Thornton effortlessly joined the last eight at the
World Seniors Darts Masters in Sunderland. 'The Thorn' defeated
Trina Gulliver 4-0 in sets in the first round.
Thornton became world senior champion in both 2022 and 2023. Over the last year and a half, however, "The Thorn's" dominance has crumbled and he failed to win any television tournaments on the World Seniors Darts Tour.
With this victory, the Scot at least reached the quarter-finals. Thornton won the first set 2-0, before Gulliver got on the scoreboard at the start of the second set with a 25-darter. However, it turned out to be the only leg 'The Golden Girl' would win in the entire match. With two 17-darters, Thornton brought the score to a 2-0 lead in sets.
The two-time major winner at the PDC then took an immediate lead in set three before a 13-darter made it 3-0. The fourth set also went 2-0 to Thornton, quickly deciding the match.
The last match of the afternoon session was not an exciting one either. In it Richard Eirig-Rowlands managed to advance to the last eight by dealing with Andrew Kateley. It was 4-1 for the Welshman.
