Dirk van Duijvenbode is through to the last eight at the European Championship Darts in Dortmund. After his 6-3 victory over Martin Schindler, he followed up his tournament with a 10-5 win over Daryl Gurney.
This victory is a great boost for Van Duijvenbode, who is on the road after being felled by a shoulder injury late last year. It is the first time since November 2022 that he has reached the quarterfinals of a ranking major. Two years ago, Van Duijvenbode even made it to the final four at the European Darts Championship, and he must defend that result at this edition.
The difference with Gurney was made on finishing. Although both players were not very sharp on the doubles, Van Duijvenbode did a little better. This was evident in the fourth leg, where Gurney missed no less than six chances to keep his own leg for 2-2. Van Duijvenbode's fourth break opportunity was successful, making it 3-1.
A 13-darter then brought Van Duijvenbode to 4-1 and by throwing out 90 in the seventh leg he kept the margin and it became 5-2 for the darter from 's-Gravenzande. In the eighth leg came a second break in Van Duijvenbode's favor. Gurney again fumbled on the doubles, after which 'Aubergenius' struck.
Before the break, Gurney managed to halve the deficit, coming back to 6-4 with a 15-darter and 13-darter. After the break, Van Duijvenbode needed a 21-darter to make it 7-4. However, he missed four chances to hand out the final knockout, letting Gurney come back to 7-5 with a 19-darter.
However, it then became 8-5 for Van Duijvenbode, who fired a 13-darter. He then threw another 13-darter, making it 9-5. A 75 finish in the fifteenth leg then clinched a spot in the quarterfinals.
On Sunday afternoon, Van Duijvenbode will play Luke Woodhouse in the quarterfinals of the European Darts Championship. The Englishman won over Ross Smith and Ryan Searle for a spot in the last eight in Dortmund.
