Michael van Gerwen and Vincent van der Voort have been best buddies for years. Although they can sometimes get on each other's nerves quite a bit, as current world number one Luke Humphries revealed including a punch-up between the pair.
Luke Humphries defeated Michael van Gerwen 17-15 in last year's World Matchplay final. Both men get along well, although Humphries does have a strong opinion about his Dutch colleague. When asked on the Happy Hour podcast who has the biggest ego in darts and named the Green Machine as the one player as "Cool Hand Luke" did not hesitate. "Well, that's easy; Michael van Gerwen," he stated.
"He wears it really, really well. It kind of suits him in a weird way. He just kind of... I think it's a Dutch thing as well. They're kind of like that. He's got a great friend in Vincent. I think that Vincent's really good for him."
"Because I think there was a story he told me once, Vincent, that he's actually punched Michael a couple of times in the face," Humphries added. "Like punched him.
"Not like absolutely batter him. But I think the first time was really early, and then they became friends. And then, like eight years ago, I think Michael was getting a bit – his ego was getting a bit high – and Vincent just whacked him. Because I think he showed Vincent disrespect – and Vincent doesn't like that. He's one of the coolest people you'll ever meet, honestly. He's so straight-talking and so funny."
Nice guy
Humphries and Van Gerwen meet weekly on the Pro Tour. "We get on really well. He's a really good character. But, yeah, Michael has definitely got the biggest ego. Vincent had to give him a punch just to calm him down!" Humphries can still laugh smugly about it now.
