Max Hopp is through to the second round of the World Matchplay after coming through in a tiebreak thriller against Dave Chisnall.
Hopp came from the brink against the St Helens ace to force the tiebreak in an up and down contest and when Chisnall faltered, ‘The Maximiser’ secured a brilliant win.
The tie started off quite even but Chisnall took a break of throw to restore parity at three apiece despite only averaging only around the 90 mark. He went ahead at 4-3 with back-to-back 180's in the leg but Hopp pegged him back again.
A potential turning point came though with 'Chizzy' going 6-4 up with five 180's a piece. He had the throw when they returned as well meaning a chance to open up a three leg gap on the German and he did with a 78 checkout.
Hopp though went on a four leg run to go 8-7 up and break the throw of ‘Chizzy’. Chisnall stopped the rot with an 81 checkout and then turned the match on it’s head to go one away.
He couldn’t finish the deal though and it went to a tie-break. The same problem occurred in the following leg and Hopp went one away from a brilliant win.
Hopp sealed the deal to mark a brilliant debut on the Winter Gardens stage.
