The doubles were the deciding factor in this showdown. Van Barneveld had a finishing percentage of only 22 percent, compared to 67 percent for his compatriot. Van Barneveld missed three chances to lead 2-0 in the second leg, and also missed two chances to make it 2-1.
With a 17-darter and a 111 finish, the 57-year-old Hagenaar then did take a 3-2 lead, but then there were five more misses on the double in leg six. With a 52 finish and a 13-darter, Wattimena retook the lead.
Van Barneveld missed two more chances in the eighth leg, after which Wattimena threw 41 to make it 5-3. 'Barney' closed to 5-4, but then Wattimena finished it off well with a 68 finish.
In the last eight, Wattimena will face Kim Huybrechts. The Belgian put an end to the tournament of taste-maker Pavel Drtil, who had previously sent Joe Cullen and Josh Rock home. Drtil gave Huybrechts a good match, but the win went to 'The Hurricane' 6-4.
