Gerwyn Price made a successful start to his 2024
Dutch Darts Championship on Saturday evening. The Welshman raced to a 6-0 win over Mickey Mansell, averaging over 101 in the process.
"Don't get me wrong, Mickey didn't play to his full potential but I just had to concentrate on my own game and I thought I scored particularly well, took my chances when I needed to and yeah, it was a steady game so I'm looking forward to the next round," assessed the former world champion of his performance in his post-match interview on stage.
Having suffered a relatively disappointing
Premier League Darts campaign this year, Price is glad to see the back of the Thursday night struggles. "I'm going in the right direction. The Premier League is over with now and I can get a bit more time to concentrate on these events," explains the 39-year-old. "I don't think I've played in a ranking event for maybe two months so yeah, it's nice to be back and playing these European Tours. But I'm looking forward to the Pro Tours too because that's the best match practice for me and I'll be a lot better."
"I haven't enjoyed the Premier League. I haven't enjoyed it since 2018 when I first played in it. But, that's the way it goes sometimes, you just have to bite the bullet and carry on," Price continues. "Now it's time to knuckle down and hit more of these events, the Pro Tours, the events that really matter and get some ranking points and hopefully get back into that top-4."
As usual, Price also got some pantomime boos from the crowd in attendance. "I expect that though!" he laughs. "They were respectful when we were playing and that's what it's all about. I don't mind the pantomime boos because all over Europe they've great with me. Especially over the last 12 to 18 months so long may it continue." In the third round at the Dutch Darts Championship, Price will square off against the exciting Dutch youngster, Gian van Veen.
