Dirk van Duijvenbode has not had the easiest period of his career. The 32-year-old Dutchman has been hobbling with shoulder problems for quite some time, but at the past Players Championship Finals he showed signs of improvement with a place in the semifinals.
Van Duijvenbode eventually lost that semifinal to Luke Humphries. "But I really should have won that one, I was very disappointed about that afterwards," said 'Aubergenius' to Sportnieuws.nl. "On the other hand, I couldn't dwell on it too long either, after all, the World Darts Championship is already around the corner."
"I haven't looked back at that match or anything, it doesn't make sense. I was particularly disappointed that I wasn't in top form. I had slept badly a couple of nights in a row and that made me very tired at the end of the day. I did everything I could that weekend, but sometimes you just have bad luck. I don't really feel like talking about it any more, I already told my story and then you hope it's done. But oh well, that's how the media works of course."
World Darts Championship
Van Duijvenbode starts this year's World Darts Championship as the 25th series leader. On Sunday, Dec. 22, he will take on the winner of the first-round duel between Madars Razma and Christian Kist in his opening match. "I would rather play against Kist," Van Duijvenbode said. "He throws at the same pace all the time and with Razma it can go either way."
Van Duijvenbode himself did follow the draw, however, James Wade indicated that he still does not know who he has to play against. "Oh well, you find out that draw anyway and when you go into Alexandra Palace. I don't know if it's really like that with Wade either, maybe it's more like a superstition."
This year a record 15 Dutchmen are competing in the World Darts Championship. Who does Van Duijvenbode see getting far? "I assume there will definitely be some Dutchmen who make it to the fourth round, but who they will be, that's hard to predict," he said.
