"I think I’ve just forgotten how to win": Peter Wright makes honest admission as Nordic Darts Masters title defence awaits

Peter Wright has travelled as defending champion to Copenhagen, where the Nordic Darts Masters will be played this weekend. Last year, 'Snakebite' captured one of the last titles on his record in Denmark.

In the first two rounds, Wright escaped elimination at the 2023 Nordic Darts Masters. After a 6-5 win over Dennis Nilsson in the first round, 'Snakebite' survived a thriller against Van Gerwen (10-9). Wright then also won over Michael Smith (11-8) and Gerwyn Price (11-5).

"I've got good memories of Copenhagen. To win the title last year was brilliant,” reflected the two-time World Champion.

Although the Scot also managed to win the European Championship last year, things have gone rapidly downhill with Wright's career. The two-time world champion has great difficulty winning matches and also finished last in the Premier League Darts with only two wins in 16 weeks. Even when looking more broadly at 'Snakebite''s statistics in 2024, things do not look very rosy. Wright has already played 69 matches in 2024, but only 31 of them were won. So he loses more matches than wins.

“I felt really good in New York last week, but I think I’ve just forgotten how to win. Over the last couple of months it feels like I’ve been punished for every mistake, but that’s just the way the game goes sometimes.

“Mentally I feel great. I believe I’ve still got the game to beat everybody. It’s just got to click - and if it clicks, then I’ll win!”

Wright will play Sweden's Johan Engstrom in the first round of the Nordic Darts Masters on Friday night. If he wins against Engstrom, he will play Luke Humphries or Benjamin Drue Reus in the second round.
