Fallon Sherrock has received a spot at the 2022/23 PDC World Darts Championship due to winning the Women's World Matchplay which has received some criticism from sections of the darting world due to not initially qualifying through the Women's Series and changing the criteria after the tournament.
But Michael Smith sees why the decision took place due to the commercial element Fallon brings and believes that it's only good for viewership and bringing more eyes to the product as well as seeing Beau Greaves as the big danger in the draw.
"I know there's a bit of controversy around it but Fallon brings excitement, tension by media, by people tuning in to watch and it's going to be a fantastic year," said Smith to Sky Sports News.
"You've got Fallon, Lisa Ashton and Beau Greaves who's probably one of the best women's darts players around at the minute so everyone's trying to avoid her in the draw. Hopefully there's a few upsets and we'll see, as long as we get the attention and everyone tunes in to watch the darts, we are all happy."
I made my comment yesterday, The world championship isNOT an invitation event and there are 128 men better qualified ( ie; they have their tour cards than sharrock. I told my mate when sharrock failed to qualify that thePDC would find a way to get her ia) and she wonders why some of the women resent her!!!) The PDC have made a mickery of qualification and ought to be ashamed of themselves.
I would so laugh if Smith drew Sherrock and then lost. If it is as he says “a commercial decision” then darts is becoming an entertainment media much like wrestling rather than a sport, that for me would be the end of my interest in it (or at least the PDC). It’s taken years for darts to finally earn some respect as a sport. I can remember the Not the Nine O’clock News sketch that did huge damage to darts and reinforced the stereotypical image, this decision to include Sherrock could be as damaging.
