Van Gerwen only took the title this season at the Dutch Darts Masters in Den Bosch in January. However, that tournament did not count for the world rankings. With this final victory, 'Mighty Mike' has at least strengthened his position in the top-16 of the Pro Tour Order of Merit again, which means he is provisionally seeded on the Euro Tours next season.
Van Gerwen qualified for the final by successively defeating Lee Cocks (6-4), Ryan Meikle (6-2), Karel Sedlacek (6-3), James Wade (6-3), Gian van Veen (6-3) and Maik Kuivenhoven (7-2). Chisnall reached the final of a Pro Tour tournament for the fourth time this season. The Englishman dealt with Jose de Sousa (6-1), Lee Evans (6-5), Jeffrey de Zwaan (6-3), Jonny Clayton (6-1), Stephen Bunting (6-2) and Ritchie Edhouse (7-6).
In the final, Chisnall managed to take a 2-1 lead by twice keeping his own leg, but in the fifth leg the Englishman was still broken after a 14-darter by Van Gerwen.
The Dutchman took a total of six legs in a row, including two 12-darters, to lead 7-2. Chisnall did not throw in the towel and came back to 7-4 with two 13-darters. After 'Chizzy' missed a chance to reduce the deficit further, Van Gerwen pulled the match definitively over the line via double 8.
Van Gerwen's statistics in the final are to savour. The three-time world champion recorded an average of 106.67 while notching a 47 percent finishing percentage. With this title, Van Gerwen collects the top prize of 15,000 pounds.
