This weekend the World Series of Darts Finals is scheduled to take place at the AFAS Live in Amsterdam. For several years, the Dutch capital has hosted the final tournament of the World Series of Darts.
As the stature of this tournament dictates, participants from quite a few different countries are present at the World Series of Darts Finals. The 24 participants come from eleven different countries. For Dutch fans, this is annually one of the rare opportunities to see the best darts players in the world at work in their own country.
The field of participants for this tournament consists of 24 players. The top eight players on the World Series Order of Merit were automatically seeded for the event in Amsterdam. These include Michael van Gerwen, Dimitri van den Bergh, Gerwyn Price and world champion Michael Smith.
Furthermore, the PDC handed out eight additional invitations to players who competed in 2023 World Series tournaments. These players include Danny Noppert, Raymond van Barneveld, Jonny Clayton and Simon Whitlock.
The last eight starting spots were drawn during a qualifying tournament for Tour Card holders. Dirk van Duijvenbode was one of the winners during this qualifier and thus gets to compete in front of his own crowd.
It is the ninth time the World Series of Darts Finals has been played. The tournament has had four winners in the past. Michael van Gerwen was the best in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2019. James Wade won the 2018 edition, while from 2020 the event had only Welsh winners. Gerwyn Price triumphed in 2020 and 2022, while Jonny Clayton won the event in 2021.
It will be the fourth edition in the Netherlands. The first time was in 2019, when Van Gerwen managed to win this tournament for the last time. In 2020, the event took place in Salzburg, Austria, before the final tournament of the World Series returned in 2021 at the AFAS Live in Amsterdam.
The tournament will be broadcast in its entirety by ITV.
The first broadcast begins on Friday, Sept. 15, at 6 p.m. Then the first round of the event is scheduled. A day later is the second round, when the eight top players, including Michael van Gerwen, Dimitri van den Bergh, Gerwyn Price and Michael Smith, also enter.
Sunday afternoon's quarterfinals begin at 12 p.m. Then the semifinals and final are scheduled for Sunday evening starting at 6 p.m.
The prize pool for this event contains a total of 300,000 pounds. However, the prize money won does not count toward the PDC Order of Merit or other money rankings.
All participants are guaranteed £5,000 in prize money. This amount could eventually rise to a sum of £70,000 in prize money for the winner.
The World Series tournaments are international events of the PDC organized to promote the sport beyond the (Western) European borders.
Earlier this year, tournaments also took place in Bahrain, Denmark, the United States, Poland, New Zealand and Australia. Past World Series tournaments have also been scheduled in Dubai, Singapore, Japan, Scotland, China, Germany and Austria.
