Peter Wright became the first player to qualify for the semifinals at the European Darts Championship in Dortmund at the expense of Chris Dobey. 'Snakebite' had given himself a wide lead against 'Hollywood,' but eventually won but only just.
Wright played his best match in ages against Dobey. His throw looked a lot smoother and 'Snakebite' was able to find the trebles easily. A 74 finish and a 13-darter gave him a 3-1 lead before Dobey halved the deficit to 3-2 with a 15-darter.
The second session was a super session by Wright. He hit 71 for 4-2 and then gave Dobey the upper hand by finishing consecutively 161 (12-darter) and 164 (12-darter). An 81 finish for an 11-darter then evened the score to 7-2. Just before entering the second break, Dobey threw himself another 14-darter for a 7-3 lead.
Then Wright came out of the break a lot sloppier. More turns came without a treble and Dobey came back to 7-7 via a 96 finish, 62 check-out and a 14-darter. The Englishman then even took the lead via double 5.
However, Dobey then failed to hold. Wright broke him back with a 13-darter and then kept his own leg with a 51 finish to make it 9-8. Dobey was unable to recover from that and Wright took the win with a 17-darter.
