Thursday night Michael van Gerwen continues his hunt for retaining his title at the World Grand Prix. After his victory over Josh Rock, a meeting with Chris Dobey awaits in the second round.
'Hollywood' was too strong for Dimitri van den Bergh in the first round. From 2015 to last year's World Grand Prix, Van Gerwen remained unbeaten against Dobey, with 'Mighty Mike' winning 11 times in a row.
At the 2022 European Championship, Dobey won against the Dutchman for the first time. Since then, 'Hollywood' has been winning against Van Gerwen a bit more often, as Dobey won four of the last nine matches between them.
The match between Van Gerwen and Dobey is the third match of the evening. The session opens with a tie between Luke Humphries and Luke Woodhouse. They won in the first round over Daryl Gurney and Dave Chisnall, respectively.
Next, Peter Wright takes on Ryan Searle. The latter eliminated Damon Heta, while Wright took the win against Gabriel Clemens. At the end of the evening, Ross Smith and Joe Cullen will determine who will be the final quarterfinalist at the World Grand Prix. Smith was victorious in the first round against Jonny Clayton, and Cullen was responsible for eliminating Mike de Decker.
How can I watch the World Grand Prix on TV?
The event will be broadcast in its entirety by Sky Sports. The first two tournament days start at 6 p.m.. Then there are three tournament days starting at 19:00 before the sessions on the final weekend start at 20:00.
How much prize money is there to earn?
The prize fund includes £600,000 in prize money. This makes the prize fund now almost sixteen times larger than when the tournament started in 1998. Back then, "only" £38,000 was made available by the PDC.
All participants will receive 7,500 pounds of prize money credited to their ranking anyway. This amount can eventually add up to a grand prize of £120,000 for the winner of the tournament.
