Dave Chisnall ran away with the title at the
European Darts Open on Sunday night. In the final of the Euro Tour tournament in Leverkusen, 'Chizzy' too strong for Ross Smith (8-6), which meant a seventh European Tour title for the world number seven.
Chisnall got into the lead in the final, but failed to break Smith in the second leg. In the third leg, Smith himself left break chances unused. The next four legs went without a hitch to the player who started the leg, making the score 4-3 in favour of 'Chizzy' after seven legs.
The multiple major-finalist then posted a break by throwing a 76 finish in the eighth leg. A 68 check-out then took Chisnall to a 6-3 lead. However, Smith did not give up and fought his way back to 6-6.
In the 13th leg, Chisnall dealt a huge blow by throwing a 132 finish while Smith was waiting on 32. Smith then missed one chance to make 7-7, after which Chisnall took the title with a 100 finish.
''This means everything,'' spoke a happy Chisnall afterwards in his stage interview. '' We weren’t at our best in the final. I think the 132 was the match-winner to be fair'', he added.
The 43-year-old Englishman also had some nice words for Smith afterwards. ''I’m really, really good friends with Ross. There could only be one winner and I’m glad it was me, but I love that guy to bits, and we’ve both had a great weekend.”
With this victory, Chisnall is now fourth on the all-time list of Euro Tour titles won. Only Michael van Gerwen (36), Peter Wright (8) and Gerwyn Price (8) have more Euro Tour titles than Chisnall. Thanks to the seven Euro Tour titles, 'Chizzy' has now won 24 PDC ranking titles in his career.
