Vincent van der Voort somewhat surprisingly qualified for the last sixteen at the European Darts Championship on Thursday evening. The Dutchman defeated Damon Heta, one of the outsiders in Dortmund after two titles in October, 6-3.
''You could call this a shock. He was the man in form after all. It looked easy on the scoreboard, but if you look at how many chances he had, maybe he should have won,'' Van der Voort commented afterwards to TOTO Dart Kings.
Fellow countrymen Danny Noppert and Dirk van Duijvenbode said after their first game that they had some nerves. That was also true for Van der Voort. ''It remains a television tournament. No matter how much experience you have, a first round always remains nervous.''
The same Noppert is the opponent of 'The Dutch Destroyer' in the second round. ''Danny is a fantastic player, he proved that. Won UK Open, semi-final at the World Matchplay.... I will then have to play a lot better than now. I have to do everything I can to upset him and that's all.''
