Michael van Gerwen won the Belgian Darts Open last weekend. In the final, he was too strong for Luke Humphries 8-6.
Van Gerwen climbs again to second place in the world rankings thanks to this tournament victory. "I know, yes, of course, I know," Van Gerwen told AD.nl. "I said it beforehand: if I win, I'm past Peter Wright. That's very important and that means a lot to me. I am a fighter and today the fire was really in my belly. Sometimes it doesn't fall your way, but then you have to keep fighting. From here I hope to show more."
Number one
'Mighty Mike' has one big goal this year. "Of course I want to win the World Championship, but actually becoming number one without a World Championship win would be even better. I had a fantastic year last year. I won four majors and made it to the World Championship final. If I win four majors again this year and lose the World Championship final... Can I sign now? Then I'll do it right away. Who achieves something like that?"
Yet Van Gerwen is also realistic. "You have to show it on television later. In terms of prize money, twenty Pro Tours are equivalent to one World Matchplay. It's not a sprint, it's a marathon."
