After his lost final in 2023,
Matt Campbell did manage to live up to his favorites at the
North American Darts Championship on Saturday night. 'The Ninja' took the continental title by winning 6-4 over Stowe Buntz in the final.
In the final, Campbell took control after two legs. With a 120 finish, 16-darter and a 15-darter, the Canadian darter grabbed a 4-1 lead. Moments later, Campbell made it 5-2 with a 14-darter. After Campbell missed a matchdart in the eighth leg, Buntz came back to 5-4 with a 20-darter and a 14-darter. However, Campbell did not let it go any further. Via a 180 score in the tenth leg, he left 121 and this finish was thrown out via single 20, triple 17 and bullseye to capture the title.
However, it took Campbell a while to realize he had won. "I wasn't sure I'd won, I thought there might've been one more leg," he said.
Nevertheless, the Canadian was happy to finally pocket the title. "I'm happy with the win and how I played today, I think I deserved it."
Campbell alluded to the fact that Smith is the record holder with two titles at the North American Darts Championship. "I want to win this title again next year, I need to tie with Jeff!"
For winning the North American Darts Championship, Campbell will receive the grand prize of $10,000. However he won't grab the rewards. The winner of the North American Darts Championship normally also receives an invitation to the Grand Slam of Darts and the PDC World Darts Championship, but players who have had their Tour Card for more than one year are excluded from these rewards. Campbell is currently in his third Tour Card year, and therefore will not receive a ticket to the Grand Slam of Darts and the PDC World Darts Championship. Those spots will be distributed by other means through the CDC circuit later this year.
