How does spotting work in darts? Referee Owen Binks explains

A spotter is behind what is seen on TV on camera and Owen Binks who also referees on the MODUS Super Series explained how it all works with a behind the scenes look shown.

He explains how darts coverage actually works and how every dart is captured and every checkout shown. Using a machine, he tells the director who in this case is Paul Starr also well known for being the MC on the World Seniors where to go in relation to the checkout that is next up. Of course being a referee, it is a job well suited due to the maths and combinations involved and keeps the coverage ticking over.

"A spotter is somebody who works directly with the director and I will instruct the director where to put the cameras. So for example if a player is on 119, I'll say things like down first and then what you see is the bottom half of the dartboard," said Binks.

"It might be that they hit treble 19, 62 left so he's going up treble 12 and hits the treble 12, double 13. I click double 13 so this is basically the machine here. Up and down buttons, zooms of certain areas. I'm basically telling the director what to do."
