The Spartan had to battle to earn a 3-2 win over Rowby-John Rodriguez. From 2-0 down, Reyes came a leg away from defeat in the fourth set. But key finishes, including 108 and 104 checkouts in the deciding set, saw him home. He told Live Darts of his relief at seeing his PDC World Championship run continue.
"I'm happy to win my first game. It was very difficult, but in the end I managed to go through," said the Spaniard.
"I believed in myself, and believed I could come back (from a 2-0 deficit).
"The 108 was the most important thing. This was why I managed to win the match."
The 31st seed plays defending champion Rob Cross in the third round at the Ally Pally. They met recently at the Players Championship Finals, with Reyes running out a 6-1 winner. Now the 31-year-old has the chance to repeat the trick, and he relishes the opportunity to knock Cross off his perch.
"You always like to play the best in the world," Reyes said.
"I did beat him at the Players Championship Finals, so I know I have the game to go through."
