Michael van Gerwen's still doing well - but what about the guy he was playing?
The Dutchman set the 2016 UK Open alight with an incredible fourth round showing. Van Gerwen powered in a 170 finish, and immediately followed it up with a nine-darter. With the Minehead crowd still reeling, Mighty Mike checked out the big fish yet again.
Van Gerwen went on to win the title, beating Peter Wright in the final with a 106 average. His opponent in that round four match was an unknown Riley's qualifier called Rob Cross. While fellow Riley's graduate Barry Lynn stole the headlines - the eventual champion saw him off in the quarter-finals - the Hastings man would go on to be slightly more successful.

- Maybe the supposed top players are burnt out from the endless travelling and tournaments, I just don't think they have the dedication or outright desire to win. I think they are more interested in the money and being popular, just keeping their rankings steady. The only thing that mattered to Phil Taylor was winning, not winning a few games to top up the money pot and seeking the fans attention. Maybe there is too many tournaments now and the enthusiasm is gone. This year especially has seen so many different winners and unexpected draws and line ups.richieburnettrocks14-11-2024
