The Dutchman set the 2016
UK Open alight with an incredible fourth round showing. Van Gerwen powered in a 170 finish, and immediately followed it up with a nine-darter. With the Minehead crowd still reeling, Mighty Mike checked out the big fish yet again.
Van Gerwen went on to win the title, beating Peter Wright in the final with a 106 average. His opponent in that round four match was an unknown Riley's qualifier called
Rob Cross. While fellow Riley's graduate Barry Lynn stole the headlines - the eventual champion saw him off in the quarter-finals - the Hastings man would go on to be slightly more successful.
