Peter Wright's story saw him go from a promising young player who famously played at the 1995 BDO World Championship against Richie Burnett but never pursued the sport to being on the verge of quitting whilst reaching the World final.
But from the lows also came the highs as he is now a two-time World Champion and he spoke about his darting beginnings and persona to the Darts Show Podcast and how despite not pursuing it and working as a builder and tyre fitter, he still loved the game.
"I suppose not, I know I was pretty good as I was turning up and winning local area competitions, the league singles and top 180's and averages at the age of 16/17. I didn't think to push it any further to be honest," he said on The Darts Show Podcast.
"I was playing five nights a week league darts. We used to play for London, I managed to get in the team and later on, they put me up for money to play 1001 and I got picked. It was a bit of an honour to be put up for a money game. I could have potentially been challenging Phil Taylor if I'd carried on."
Becoming Snakebite
He also told the story of his Snakebite persona with Wright, a shy person off the oche becoming the character with his hair dyed, Don't Stop the Party walk-on and dancing across the stage.
"It was down to Naomi (his daughter) as she used to colour her hair. I was thinking that'd be interesting to do. I've always said I wanted to be different from these guys as 9/10, they are all the same. Sorry guys you're boring.
"At least we've got a brand. It was actually bleached and dyed and I felt good. But the following week, I wanted it a different colour but Jo (his wife) said you can't keep doing that as your hair will fall out. So we found out a way of doing it with paint like Avatar. That's why it doesn't really run unless you go out in the rain."
"It was the year I got to the final of the World's that I started wearing the silly trousers. We asked Matt Porter if we could do the trousers and he went no and it was Barry Hearn that turned around and said yeah, it's different. Let's go with it. We've stuck with getting away with crazy outfits."
"The Dr Jekyll, Mr Hyde kind of thing. I turn into the dart player when we start doing all the hair. It makes me focus getting ready for my match, I suppose the other guys it's jumping in the shower, ironing their top or getting someone else to iron it for them and put it on and they're ready. With me it's a slower process and it sometimes looks amazing and sometimes it doesn't."
