Jonny Clayton has qualified for the second round of the 2024 European Championship in Dortmund, Germany. 'The Ferret' beat Chris Dobey 6-4 in a high quality opening round match, setting up a showdown with world champion and world number one Luke Humphries.
Clayton pinned 7 180's as he sealed the win 6-4 against 'Hollywood'. He broke immediately in the tie going 2-0 up and continued to build on that. Albeit he missed chances to go 4-1 up albeit he won the legs on his throw hitting a 96 checkout with Dobey looming large for 4-2. A 76 checkout saw Clayton go one away and he finished it on his next throw with that 84.
"I always say it's tough to play against a good mate and Chris Dobey is one of my best mates you know. We sit on the same table and I know what Chris can do. He's one of the biggest 180 throwers on the circuit," a relieved Clayton reflected in his post-match press conference. "I know I broke him early, but I just held my throw and that was important. So you know, I've got a smile on my face! Especially playing against someone the caliber of Chris Dobey."
Clayton hasn't been at his brilliant best over the twelve months. With that smile back on his face though, the Welshman is growing in confidence. "I mean listen, I've had a tough time, it's like that. But they're starting to come back and I'm starting to win games again," he says optimistically. "Puts a smile on my face and it puts confidence in myself. That's what I want and hopefully, I can carry on going."

In just under two months, the World Darts Championship will be upon us. Clayton seems to be back in good form at the right time. "I've got that fire back in my belly and hey, who knows what comes with that," the Welshman concludes.
