In an absolute cracker between two big names,
James Wade advanced to the second round at the
World Grand Prix at the expense of
Peter Wright. 'The Machine' fell a set behind, but still won 2-1 in sets.
The first set could have already gone to Wade. The left-handed darter led 2-1, but missed an arrow in the fourth and fifth leg each time for the set. That set then went 3-2 to Wright.
Wade then put things in order by winning the second set 3-1. In the deciding set Wade immediately broke ahead and doubled his lead with a 19-darter. After Wright missed nine doubles to stay in the match, Wade finished it off with a double 10.
Mike de Decker got his first win at the World Grand Prix. 'The Real Deal,' who was able to make his second appearance in Leicester, recorded a fine victory over
Damon Heta, the number nine seed.
It was a particularly exciting match between the Belgian and the Australian, as many as fourteen of the fifteen possible legs were played. The level was also particularly good; 92 average for De Decker and 94 for Heta.
In the first set, Heta took a 2-0 lead after two 14-darters, but a missed set arrow in the third leg killed it. Via double 19 De Decker took his first leg and with a 12-darter he evened the score. With a 116 finish the darter from Mechelen then secured the set.
Heta then recovered in the second set. With two 15-darters and a 14-darter, the second set went 3-1 to the Australian, who thus forced a deciding set.
A 14-darter and a 13-darter gave Heta a 2-1 lead in the final set. He then missed two matchdarts in leg four, after which De Decker forced a final leg via double 6. In the last leg, De Decker quickly distanced himself from his opponent and a 17-darter secured the win.
