Dave Chisnall and Dimitri van den Bergh are the first players on Tuesday night through to the Last 16 at the 2024 World Grand Prix after pretty contrasting victories.
Chisnall firstly saw off Cameron Menzies to win his opener for the first time in three years as the St Helens ace produced as per his recent form line.
It was pretty comprehensive and also you feel a missed opportunity for Menzies. He has been one of the most in-form players in darts as of late but his face said it all as he lost out in six straight legs on his debut.
Chisnall began the opening set with three straight legs with two 180's and 3/5 on the finishing doubles. It didn't get much better for Menzies.
Menzies posted on social media about him working his day job this morning before going to Leicester for the World Grand Prix but this distraction didn't help him. He wasn't at the races and on his recent form and Chisnall took full advantage. He produced three more unanswered legs to seal the win setting up double 18 to claim the second set 3-0.
Menzies had his head in his hands as Chisnall hit the winning double as he was defeated quickly on debut. Chisnall in the end averaged 91 and hit 46% on the doubles with four 180's. A comprehensive win and a great start.
While Dimitri van den Bergh on the otherhand survived an almighty scare. In the first to two formats, upsets are inevitable and he had to rally from a set down to deny Luke Woodhouse 2-1 with a 97.2 average, five 180's and a high checkout of 132.
The Bewdley ace also known as 'The Shed' had a superb start to his time in Leicester. He wrapped up the first set 3-1 with a 95 average and 3/3 on the outer ring to take the game to Van den Bergh.
But this just upped the anti for Van den Bergh who drew level in the second set. He averaged 104 in set two to win it 3-1 breaking Woodhouse's throw with a 59 checkout to claim it and make it 1-1.
The writing was on the wall for the Belgian resurgence to hit top gear as he produced a superb 132 on the bull with Woodhouse not pinning 92 to go 1-0 up in the deciding set. He went to the brink with a 78 checkout but pinned double eight to seal the win on his own throw before it went to a potential decider.
