Luke Humphries sent a statement out to the rest of the field at the 2022
Grand Slam of Darts with a 107 average in easing past Ryan Searle who himself averaged over a ton but only got a leg in a 5-1 defeat.
"I was really happy with that performance there, I was saying yesterday that I felt there's a lot more to give. That first dart was going in and I was following it whereas usually the last few appearances on TV, I haven't been following it enough and that game there I did. But I was pushed hard by Ryan, he played fantastic. He made me play that well," said Humphries to Online Darts.
"I knew we both probably averaged over 100 but 107 is a phenomenal average. It's going to take a lot of good performances like that to beat you averaging like that but the most important thing is that it's got me through. You don't really want to go into that last game with pressure on yourself to win two legs here, two legs there. It's nice now to know that I'm through."
As one of the standout players this season, Humphries has his eyes on bringing his floor form back to the stage and getting Premier League and World Series invites.
"The last two years have been a slow climb. When I made the UK Open final I was 39th and now I'm sitting seventh provisionally. I'm knocking on the door but I'm going to keep going and keep proving my worth and keep trying my best to get selected for a few other events that I could be selected for. It's up to me to force their arm to put me in things, I think that they get everything right they pick the right players but next year might be my year for selections."
"Usually I was a stage player and not a floor player. This year I was by far the best floor player on tour, this year the TV stage hasn't gone so good. All I can think of is I can put them together and I am in the top four. It shows the consistency that in the first two years of my career I didn't have."
