Jonny Clayton took the weekly title in Aberdeen on Thursday night. In the final, The Ferret was too strong for Michael van Gerwen (6-5), meaning he also takes over the number one position in the Premier League Darts standings from Mighty Mike.
Both players started to find their A-game after four legs. Van Gerwen threw a 12-darter to lead 3-2 and then held his own leg with a 13-darter. Clayton returned to 4-4 by throwing out 66 and 88.
Still it was Van Gerwen who came within one leg of victory. The Dutchman threw a 14-darter for 5-4 and in the tenth leg he was allowed to throw for the match. Van Gerwen got a matchdart, but missed the bullseye. Then it was Clayton who threw an 11-darter for 5-5. The Welshman was then allowed to start the final leg and used this advantage with a 15-darter.
New format
The eight participants play a tournament sixteen times. It will be arranged so that a player meets the other participants twice in the quarter-finals. During two weeks of play, in the eighth and sixteenth week, the draw is determined by league standings heading into each night.
Points can be scored with results in the sixteen tournaments. A semi-final earns two points, a second place three points and a tournament win five points and a £10,000 bonus. Based on these points the new Premier League Darts ranking is formed. The four best players advance to the Premier League Darts play-offs.
