The UK Open was played in Minehead last weekend. This tournament is a unique tournament on the PDC calendar, because the UK Open is the only tournament where an open draw is used. Michael van Gerwen hopes that in time another unique tournament will be held, he told Dartsnieuws.com.
Most PDC tournaments are direct knockout tournaments, often over best of 11 legs. Besides the UK Open there are some exceptions. For example, there is a set system at the World Darts Championship and the World Grand Prix, and at the latter tournament legs even have to start on the double. Pairs are also part of the World Cup of Darts, the only nations tournament in the PDC.
Van Gerwen would like to see a new ranking tournament, replacing the Masters at the beginning of the year. ''Legs at 1001 start, with the top 32 in the world. Best of 5 legs first match, and then continue'', is the Dutchman's idea.
''That is also nice for the people at home. But I am not the chairman of the PDC, that is a decision for other people. Unfortunately, otherwise I would have created this tournament for sure'', said Van Gerwen.
