Leonard Gates has already won two World Seniors Darts Tour (WSDT) tournaments this year. At the World Seniors Matchplay, in early September, he will look for a third consecutive title.
Gates is currently brimming with confidence. "I have a better idea of how they play and feel better prepared than in the past in terms of what to expect. I just know my game needs to stay steady and I need to remain focused on the goal in order to achieve my third trophy," said the 52-year-old American in conversation with the WSDT social media. "I feel like the players are more relaxed and still competing on a young man’s level because they are genuinely enjoying it."
Earlier this year, there was the PDC North American Championship, where a ticket to the PDC World Championship could be earned. Gates, however, couldn't snatch that coveted ticket. "After the North American PDC players had their spots, and two other spots were given to winners of other CDC events, there were only 3 spots available. Those spots were all given out in open qualifiers, rather than using any of the CDC rankings or confining it to CDC tour card holders. Unfortunately, it just didn't work out for me in that open qualifier, costing me the opportunity to defend my title."
Gates is not a full-time pro. "I do work part time in Texas making deliveries casually when I am available. Darts is a big part of my income and obviously more enjoyable, but I do supplement my income locally part time when I can. With my travel schedule it's difficult to work a regular job, so this works out for me."
Q-School
Early next year there will be new edition of PDC Q-School, will 'The Soulger' attempt to claim a Tour Card? "At this time I feel attached to the World Seniors Tour and I'm really enjoying it, and I would like to defend my titles and participate in the Seniors Championships. I think we made a very good decision this year and have absolutely no regrets. I also see the World Seniors Tour getting stronger and stronger. With that said, it's too soon to say if that will change, but right now I'm competing right where I want to be."
