Kim Huybrechts has been a well known part of the PDC ranks for a long time and in a recent interview with Dartsnews.com, the 35-year-old Belgian discusses how he is getting through the pandemic and his goals for the rest of the season.
It is a difficult time for many darts players both financially and having to adjust to a new way of life.
"However, everything is fine with me," said Huybrechts. “I try to keep myself busy here and there by exercising a lot. And spending extra time with the family, especially now that my second daughter is being born within four weeks. The PDC provided financial support in the beginning of the pandemic for the players, but in the meantime we have had a number of tournaments, which gives us some financial breathing space again. "
Huybrechts was recently active to begin the year in the first two blocks of Super Series. "I have been playing very well but unfortunately the results were not forthcoming. Still I am sure that I am on the right track and that I am gradually returning to my top level. "
Co-commentator on VTM
For several months now, major PDC tournaments have been broadcast on the Belgian channel VTM. Last week, Huybrechts commentated on the Premier League Darts for two nights. "I really enjoyed doing it and I feel quite at home there. But I still prefer to be on the stage myself. However, if people ask me more and more for such jobs in the future, I will certainly not say no."
Darts has become increasingly popular on TV in Belgium. "It is certainly nice that it is finally becoming popular in Belgium," said Huybrechts. "Sadly, this was not the case when I played in the Premier League, but this only increases the hunger to be there again."
Kim's fellow countryman Dimitri Van den Bergh recently moved from Belgium to England. "This is certainly not an option for me, as my first daughter is already six years old and grew up here. Also, this is quite an adjustment in terms of language and lifestyle."
Playing without a crowd
Huybrechts is a player who usually bounces off the adrenaline of the crowd. Due to the pandemic, he has been missing that for a long time now. "Obviously I miss the crowd. Any sport without an crowd is much more boring and that is how we experience it on the stage. However, I cannot say that it negatively affects my performance."
Qualification for World Matchplay
Finally, we checked his ambitions for the coming months. "First and foremost, I'm going to try to qualify for the World Matchplay during the upcoming Super Series. After that will also depend on how many tournaments are played and that is just to try to climb the Order of Merit as much as possible," Huybrechts concludes. .
