Mervyn King continued his run of losing in TV finals with an 11-8 defeat to Jonny Clayton at The Masters this past weekend.
King had another brilliant series after reaching the final of the Players Championship Finals late last year and has been in superb form for the past 6-8 months.
But the former World Master admitted his form wasn’t sustained and that Clayton deserved the title in the end.
"I can't explain what happened because I haven't got a clue," said King post match.
"One minute I felt right and the next I didn't. It was very on and off. I started to fall asleep in the semis against Gerwyn and got away with it.
"I was just hoping hit maybe I could force a last leg but all credit to Jonny he played some cracking darts, fair play to him.
"Hopefully I'll be back again fairly soon."
poor merv. he's been playing so.well he'll be very disappointed. pressure got to him in the middle of the match there. he started playing well again at the end but it was all too late. crucial point for me was leg 11. needs 108, hits T18 to leave 54. then goes for the single 18 to leave double 18. madness! there's already a flight sticking out the treble so the single will tend go towards the double and possibly obscure it even if it had gone in. he hits the single 4, poor effort at bull and loses the leg. From 5-3 up he slides to 9-5 down. single 14 then doubletops for 54 every single time. also weird selection in leg 12 or 13. he's got 80 and reverts back to his bad old ways and goes for 5 16's. doesn't get a shot at the bull. Johnny closes out beautifully and another leg slips away. then later in the match he hits two 80 finishes going the proper way on 20's (the difference being you might only get a shot at the bull going the 16s route but you should get a shot at a good double if you go the 20s route). pressure got to him a bit but he's playing the best I've ever seen him play and I'm sure he'll get to more finals this year
