Legendary commentator John Gwynne passes away following battle with cancer

Legendary commentator, John Gwynne has sadly passed away on Saturday morning following his battle with cancer, it has been announced.

Gwynne previously a schoolteacher reported for radio and Darts Phone Line commentary before joining the Sky Sports commentary team at the first ever WDC World Championship back in 1993 and from there became an integral voice alongside Sid Waddell and Dave Lanning.

He would go on to be part of the team for the next two decades retiring in 2013 after covering 20 World Championships and 20 World Matchplays but guest commentary appearances meant he never fully left the world of darts.

As well as darts, he also worked on Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports and also broadcasted on cricket, rugby league and speedway and will be sadly missed.

"John was a respected and popular figure in darts and across sports media and this is a sad time for all who knew him," said PDC Chief Executive Matt Porter.

"As part of the original Sky Sports commentary team alongside Sid Waddell and Dave Lanning, John's distinctive voice was part of the soundtrack to the PDC's formative years and they formed an iconic trio.

"John was hugely passionate about the sport of darts and made a great contribution at all levels during his career.

"We send our condolences and sympathies to John's family and friends."
