Mansell on 2018 DRA controversy after Puha win: "That was a massive sucker punch"

Mickey Mansell produced an excellent whitewash win in the afternoon session at the 2020/21 PDC World Darts Championship in his first ever victory at the Alexandra Palace.

Mansell was emotional afterwards with his family not being able to attend but after playing multiple times at the Palace without victory, he was glad to get back and claim a win.

"I'm disappointed the family is not here, I'm lucky enough my wife is here. At the start of every year, I make the promise to my wife and three children, if I get to the World Championship we are all going," said Mansell post match.

"It was more for them, I have put some much effort in. Everybody knows the record here, you can't change it unless you get back here. I'm very proud of myself of continuously getting back here.

"It's easy to walk away from the whole thing and say you were here five times and you never won a good at the World Championship, that's not how I perceive my career."

"Why end the career on a defeat, why not go for it. Thankfully that's what's happened today."

Mansell also discussed the controversy from 2018 with the DRA where he was fined £500 for not playing to the best of his ability against Jim Long.

"2018 really was a massive sucker punch. That was a complete nightmare, what happened after that had an effect on me for a long time. Not just losing but everybody knows the situation with the PDC, the DRA. Last year I wanted to prove and I was probably trying too hard."

"My family lived through that. That's why I'm so pleased for me. it's easy to throw in the towel."
