For Nathan Aspinall, it was more final heartbreak at the World Series of Darts Finals in Amsterdam. The recent World Matchplay champion was unable to add another title to his collection, losing out 11-4 to Michael van Gerwen in the final.
“Full credit to Michael. This guy has so much energy, and his will to win is exceptional," said a classy Aspinall in his post-match interview following the defeat. With this being the third big match of the day, Aspinall looked weary in the final and was unable to replicate his top form. Van Gerwen remained full of energy, much to the Englishman's disbelief. “I just said to Michael, I don’t know how he does it!”
A second major final of the year though, continues the positive progression Aspinall has shown throughout 2023. With a big few months ahead, 'the Asp' will rightly head into the key part of the season full of confidence and self-belief.
“I’m very happy to participate in another final with Michael. In my era he’s the best, and it’s an honour to share the stage with him," continues Aspinall in his assessment of the final. “Even though I’ve lost, I’m so glad he’s won in front of his home crowd, because he deserves it.”
