Michael van Gerwen will face off against Luke Humphries in the final of the 2024
World Matchplay after defeating Michael Smith in the semi-finals.
It was a 17-13 win for Van Gerwen as he hit three ton plus checkouts on his way to victory and now he has 'Cool Hand Luke' in his sights after a quality display.
"Only one person deserved to win this semi-final I thought it was me. I could've been 12-10 up easily but when you keep missing doubles and chances you're going to make it incredibly difficult and it's exactly what I did. But I kept battling and kept fighting and never gave up," said Van Gerwen to Online Darts.
"I only believe in my own ability and I'm a good player I know that. My scoring power has been fantastic this tournament but my doubles are letting me down. But you have to do that better tomorrow (Sunday).
But in losing to Luke Humphries seven times in a row, a multitude of redemption is next on his mind.
"It's going to be the really big format and I'm looking forward to. We had a lot of small games against each other especially in the Premier League. Last few times I didn't play the best but I'm in a lot better form now."
"I let myself down too much in this game and I know that I can do a lot more but I did the right things and that's the only thing that matters. With all due respect Luke has been playing well but he's not been tested properly yet. I'm going to do that tomorrow (Sunday).
"It would mean a lot to me (to win the title) but we are not that far yet. I have a big battle tomorrow and I'm looking forward to it. I have to smash him."
