Norman Madhoo has qualified for the World Darts Championship. He gets to compete in the most important tournament of the year at Alexandra Palace as the winner of the Championship Darts Latin America and Caribbean.
In recent years, a separate qualifying tournament was held to determine which South American dart player would be allowed to compete in the World Darts Championship. Diogo Portela entered the past six editions in Ally Pally, but it soon became clear that there was not going to be a seventh participation in a row.
In fact, the PDC came up with something new. A circuit was rigged for players from Latin and South America. Four tournaments were completed and the best player from this tour would receive an invitation to the World Darts Championship.
The first two tournaments were in August. Norman Madhoo of Guyana won the first tournament by defeating compatriot Sudesh Fitzgerald in the final. Fitzgerald then did win the second tournament after defeating Alex Gutierrez of Costa Rica.
Last weekend were the final two tournaments of the Championship Darts Latin America and Caribbean Tour. Madhoo immediately did excellent business by winning the third event. His competitor Fitzgerald was then eliminated in the last sixteen of the fourth tournament by Artur Valle, so participation in the World Darts Championship was within reach for Madhoo. The fact that he himself also lost at the last sixteen did not matter anymore. In the end Valle won the final tournament, but that did not matter for the final ranking of the Championship Darts Latin America and Caribbean Tour.
Madhoo has competed in the PDC's World Darts Championship three times before. Hiij made his debut at the 2004 edition, where he lost in the first round to Steve Smith. He returned again at the 2010 edition, but then Madhoo lost his match in the preliminary round against Ken MacNeil. Also at the 2011 edition, the preliminary round was the finish line. Madhoo then lost to Devon Petersen.
