Much has been of the ruling by the PDC that has forced a number of players, including Luke Littler and Beau Greaves to make a choice between playing at the WDF World Championship and the PDC World Darts Championship. Now, Matt Porter has explained the decision.
"Obviously, the WDF have made the decision to move their world championship to prior to Alexandra Palace which has obviously changed the dynamic of things. Clearly it's the second event that always has to make the decision. We've never been the second event before," says Porter in conversation with Online Darts.
"There has to be a point where you have to make a decision that's in the best interest of the organization. Everything we've tried to build up over the last 30 years, the fact that no sport benefits from having more than one world champion, the fact that we strongly believe in integration between the men's game and the women's game at the elite level. Ultimately we've made a decision that's in the best interest of the PDC I don't think there's going to be any player who would disagree."
"They may think it's not a decision that's in the best interest of them as an individual depending on their circumstances but we have to protect the investment and the effort that we've put into building up the PDC World Championship," he continues.
As mentioned, one of the players affected by this choice is Beau Greaves. "It wouldn't be the decision I would make if I was her but that's not to say it's the wrong decision for her," Porter says on the possibility of Greaves choosing the WDF. "It's a difficult one, as I say everyone's got to do what they've got to do. You know we're investing a lot of money into women's darts, the women's series the prize money is significant the women's Matchplay the qualification spots for the Grand Slam and the World Championship and the support from the women's game has been tremendous."
